Congratulations to Vantage
Point’s Envirothon teams and a special thank you to Trish Foster, Advisor and Coach!!!
Vantage Point was represented by two teams of students this past Friday, March 27th and Saturday,
March 28th, in Fort Valley, Georgia at the State Envirothon competition. These first year teams did a great job
representing the program among some heavy contenders from across the state who have over the years placed 1st in the State
earning the privilege to represent Georgia in the National competition that usually takes place in July. The Envirothon
is North America’s premier natural resource education competition for high school students. It offers both in-class
curriculum and hands-on field experiences focused around ecology, natural resource management, and current environmental issues.
Both teams qualified for the State competition having secured advancement in the East Regionals competition held in Athens,
GA at UGA’s Whitehall Forest on March 5th.
Based on testing and field work in the areas of Aquatics,
Forestry, Soils/Land Use, Wildlife, and the Current Event- Urban Forestry, the VPE Blue Team was awarded 4th place in the
State! Team members include Connor Horne, Coral Foster, Cooper Foster, and Ryan Jones. VPE Red team was awarded
7th place in the State with team members Melanie Hughes, Connor Campbell, Hunter MacConnell, Phillip Alexander and Emma Alexander.
These overall placements were huge accomplishments for first year teams in an event such as this. The State Envirothon Board
acknowledged Vantage Point’s teams for doing so well also! Based on performances in individual events, recognition
is given to VPE Team Blue for also placing third in Forestry and second in Wildlife in the State. VPE Red placed 4th
in Aquatics as well.
The current issue event changes each year with 2015 focusing on Urban Forestry.
Having spoken to the veteran schools at the State competition, this year’s scenario was the toughest yet. Two
weeks before competition, teams are presented a scenario that requires thorough problem solving and critical thinking applications.
Teams were tasked to give an oral presentation a community urban forestry plan with a tree ordinance and budget spanning
a 5year stretch demonstrating long-term sustainability. VPE Team Blue placed second in this event with 0.8 points away from
1st place. VPE Team Red placed third.
Way to Go Vantage Point Blue and Red!!!
